Facilities and environment

Himaharju Foster Home is located at Kari’s home farm. The main building was built in 1957 and was rebuilt in 1999. The main building offers places to live for seven children and youngsters, and for the host family. Elinantalo (built in 2007), which is close to the main building, offers places for five youngsters.

The old cowshed has been renovated for use as horse stables, hobbies (in 2000) and school activities (in 2005). There are facilities and equipment for a band and karaoke rehearsals, a small gym and a possibility for different games. There is also a small apartment for visitors and returnees, or for use as a shelter.

Tainantupa (built in 2005) is located in the middle of the yard. Here there is a possibility for knitting, sewing and crafts.

In the same yard you can find a smoke sauna (built in 2007) and a swimming pool (built in 2005) and several old log houses; sheds and barns for storage use and an old drying barn for the bigger celebrations.

The ruins of the old cowshed offer a wonderful place for barbecueing or different kinds of events during summertime.

The terrain around Himaharju varies, so the possibilities for hobbies are diverse. Fishing, hunting, collecting berries, driving a car on the field and on the ice, riding in the nature, birdwatching, swimming and cross-country skiing are all possible very close to Himaharju.

There is a hootchie (built in 2003) one kilometre from Himaharju that offers a place for relaxation or even grilling sausages.

There is a developmental apartment at Lähteentie (built in 2003) for four youngsters and supportive apartments at Asematie (2004) and Saratie (2006) in Kiuruvesi centre and four supportive apartments (2005) close to the vocational school of Iisalmi.

In addition to the Foster Home, we are pursuing forestry and cultivate hay and grain for our horse stables at the farm.
