How we work

  • The function of Himaharju is based on systematic and family therapeutic thinking.
  • The idea is individual treatment, upbringing and tuition that takes place in a safe and homely environment. Himaharju provides a stimulating environment close to nature.
  • A sociopedagogical context and principles of communal upbringing guide our functions. We respect strong parenthood and, at the same time, we emphasize the youngsters’ responsibility for their own lives.
  • Attendance and availability of the parents brings safety and unifies functions when supporting persistent and long-lasting growth among the young and their families.

    Treatment and upbringing

Every child has his or her own treatment and upbringing plan, which is based on a client plan devised together with the child, a social worker and the people close to the child. It is updated as needed. In our daily life we follow our daily rhythm and the rules and boundaries devised together over the years. There is a rule folder in use, which is carefully followed and updated in a weekly community meeting if necessary. The treatment and upbringing take place while working together with the youngsters in their daily chores.

    Schooling

Young people are working for their future by learning and schooling. The aim is that every youngster achieves at least a secondary education. Schooling is started at the home school in Himaharju. Each youngster learns how to work and we help them to achieve the level of their skills. The aim is that the youngster is able take part in normal tuition. There is a possibility for a double degree (high school + vocational school) in our municipality.

    Hobbies

Horses and working in the stables have been part of the informal routines at Himaharju from the beginning. Trained and experienced riding instructors help the children’s and youngsters’ social growth and wellbeing. All the youngsters and adults at the Foster Home are able to take part in this activity.

All the youngsters have been able to take part in a band group from Kiuruvesi Folk High School. The group has met at Himaharju on a weekly basis since 2002. With the help of trained and experienced musician Heikki Komulainen, who has worked with young people for many years, it’s also possible to study individually, e.g. playing the guitar.

At Himaharju we also support individual hobbies. Over the years the youngsters have been into drawing, painting, playing, dancing, singing, exercising in different forms and handicrafts. All this is possible with help of Kiuruvesi Folk High School and local sports clubs.

How we work together with the people close to the child

We actively work with the people close to the child by regularly keeping in touch and encouraging them to visit Himaharju. In the springtime we also approach families with letters giving the annual report and annual plan. Once a year all the families of the children and youngsters living at Himaharju gather for a family camp, which has been a great success. We play different kinds of games, exchange news and together develop the function of Himaharju.
